Hey there mama, is it starting to look like Christmas where you live? Maybe some snowfall or have you set up your Christmas tree?

Ever since I became a missionary Christmas looks a little different, it’s summertime here in South Africa and I hardly ever see any Christmas lights. My husband and I have been so busy with ministry we haven’t even set up our tree yet or even began to think about Christmas presents. Christmas isn’t about the presents though, or the decorations. Christmas is about Christ our Saviour and we are celebrating His birth.

During the Christmas season it can be very easy to start getting caught up in the fun Christmas activities and lose our focus which should be on God.

Here are 7 tips to help you stay focused on Christ’s love this season:

#1. Study the birth of Jesus

Read the first few chapters from Matthew or Luke in the Bible

#2. Do a Christmas theme devotional

I have a list of 4 great ones right here

#3. Make a playlist of Christmas songs that actually talk about Christ’s birth

  • Hark the Harold Angels Sing
  • Silent Night
  • O Holy Night
  • O Come All Ye Faithful
  • What Child is This
  • O Come Let Us Adore Him

#4. Spend time giving back to the community through volunteer work

Serve at a homeless shelter or an old age home, shovel driveways for people on your street, etc.

#5. Make a thankfulness jar

Anytime someone in the family has something to be thankful for the write it down in the jar and on Christmas morning the family reads it together.

#6. Keep everything simple

If you feel like you go overboard at Christmas and lose focus, try to keep things more simple this year. Minimize the decorations, presents and even commitments to events. Christmastime can easily become overwhelming and stressful.

#7. Use this season to start talking to others about Jesus

Talk to your friends and family about the birth of Jesus, or you could invite them to any special events being held at your church.

Christmas is a great time to talk about God with our children, no matter how you choose to celebrate the holiday (or at all). What are some ways you are using Christmas time to talk to your kids about Jesus? Do you have any special family traditions you do?

If you take a look at the post about the 4 Christmas devotionals you can find out what my South African husband has always done on Christmas morning.

Have a wonderful December as you prepare for celebrating Christ’s birth.

Much love,

Lizzy
